ACORN's plan to rebuild the 9th Ward
January 09, 2007

New Orleans head organizer Tanya Harris guides Usher on a tour of the Lower 9th Ward in December 2006.

ACORN unveiled the “People’s Plan’’ for rebuilding the 9th Ward during a special meeting on Jan. 6.

The study, presented by noted scholar and urban planner Dr. Kenneth Reardon, is the city’s most comprehensive look to date at residents' views for rebuilding their community. It is based upon door-to-door surveys of 200 residents and assessments of more than 3,500 properties in the Upper and Lower 9th Ward.

Urban planners and students at Cornell, Columbia University and the University of Illinois conducted a survey.

"These plans are what the residents say we want for our neighborhood," said ACORN member Vanessa Gueringer. "We want to make sure that our voices are heard in the planning process."
