The Battle for Los Angeles

On the morning of Wednesday, April 25, hundreds of residents from throughout Los Angeles, along with ACORN members and allies from the Housing LA coalition marched to LA City Hall to demand that the city protect a list of 100 affordable buildings at risk of being lost to condo conversions, demolitions, unscrupulous eviction attempts, and severe slum conditions.

At the march, community leaders from organizations such as ACORN, SCANPH, Coalition LA, LA CAN, POWER, Union de Vecinos, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and others told first-hand accounts of being forced to leave long-time residences due to demolitions and conversions.   Marchers described stories of unjust eviction attempts by landlords determined to move in higher-paying tenants, and  the dangerous slum conditions they are forced to live in, despite repeated complaints to landlords.

The group will turn in a detailed list of 100 buildings located throughout the city, and demand that city officials take steps to preserve these buildings by assigning special staff dedicated to resolving the problems listed. Event leaders will also call on the city to pass a comprehensive housing policy platform, including the requirement of affordable units in new developments; a permanent source for the city’s Housing Trust Fund; and the preservation of the city’s existing affordable housing.
